Retired Techie is about my journey navigating the next chapter of life after retiring from a 30-year career as a tech exec in Silicon Valley and Seattle. My aim is to share insights and reflections about achieving a more balanced and fulfilling life in (semi) retirement.
Why follow my journey?
Real-life insights. Unlike journalists who report on trends or experiences of others, I share my own personal experiences with a hope to provide a trusted viewpoint for anyone else considering a similar path.
Balance. Semi-retirement has allowed me to achieve a healthier balance overall. I share some practical insights about reducing stress and finding joy in everyday activities.
Financial experiences. I retired at age 51. Almost all whom I’ve spoken to at this age have expressed some stress about the financial aspect of retiring. I aim to share some first-hand experiences with paid consulting, portfolio management, angel investing, private equity, real estate, alternative investments, and direct private lending.
Personal growth. The retirement journey isn’t just about slowing down, but also about growing in new directions. I will share thoughts about my journey to get more in touch with my emotions.
Community and connection. After retiring, I realized the need to more closely connect with others on the same journey. This took a few different forms, and I share my quest to find community through volunteer work, angel investing, regular beer outings, and our living community. I also hope our dialog here on Substack will help us all find community, too.
Flexiblity and freedom. One aspect of retirement I have enjoyed is the flexibility. I hope to also provide a glimpse of the opportunities that this freedom has afforded, including ad hoc travel and spontaneous experiences with friends.
Thank you for joining me on this journey. Whether you’re a fellow tech executive considering a change or simply someone looking for inspiration, I hope my reflections provide you with valuable insights and encouragement.
